PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona Suns announced Sunday that they have acquired center Damonte Dodd from the available player pool.

Dodd takes Anthony Bennett’s spot on the roster as the forward heads to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers with Team Canada.

The Suns roster remains at 13 players.

Dodd was most recently on the Delaware 87ers training camp roster, getting an invite after participating in a local tryout. He was waived on Nov. 2.

The 6-foot 11-inch, 250-pound center played four years collegiately at the University of Maryland. He averaged 3.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game over 119 career games (69 starts). He had his best season his senior year in 2016-17, where he averaged 6.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game.

Dodd, 23, finished his career eighth on the all-time blocks list in Maryland men’s basketball history, finishing with 141. His Terrapins made it as far as the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament with Dodd in 2016 before losing to top-seeded Kansas.

Bennett leaves the Suns to join Canada’s 12-man roster who will compete in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers.

Training camp for the Canadian team begins Monday in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After a four-day camp, Canada will host the Bahamas in Halifax on Friday, Nov. 24, at the Scotiabank Centre at 5 p.m. MT. Team Canada will play its second and final game at the Dominican Republic on Monday, Nov. 27, at 5 p.m.

The FIBA World Cup Qualifying games are used to qualify 31 of the 32 nations that will compete in the 2019 FIBA World Cup. China is already qualified as the host nation.

Games in November are part of the first round of qualifying. The round continues with more games in February, June and July of 2018. There are three rounds of qualifiers to get to the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

Bennett averaged 12.3 points on 61.5 percent shooting and 7.2 rebounds in six games (all starts) for the NAZ Suns this season. He is expected to return to the team on Nov. 28, when the Suns play at Delaware.
