PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona Suns announced Wednesday that Anthony Bennett has returned to the team following his participation in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Americas Qualifiers with Team Canada.
In a corresponding move, the Suns waived center Damonte Dodd.
The Suns roster remains at 13 players.
Bennett left the Suns to join Canada’s 12-man roster on Nov. 19.
After participating in a four-day training camp in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada hosted the Bahamas in Halifax on Nov. 24 and played at the Dominican Republic on Nov. 27. Bennett tallied four points, four rebounds, an assist and a block in 18 minutes in Canada’s 93-69 win over the Bahamas. He started the game and had a +20 in the plus-minus category. Canada lost at the Dominican Republic 88-76, where Bennett earned his second start, recording two points, four rebounds, an assist and one block in 20 minutes.
The FIBA World Cup Qualifying games are used to qualify 31 of the 32 nations that will compete in the 2019 FIBA World Cup. China is already qualified as the host nation. Games in November are part of the first round of qualifying. The round continues with more games in February, June and July of 2018. There are three rounds of qualifiers to get to the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
Bennett averaged 12.3 points on 61.5 percent shooting and 7.2 rebounds in six games (all starts) for the NAZ Suns this season before leaving the team.
Dodd, a 6-foot 11-inch, 250-pound center who played four years collegiately at the University of Maryland, played his first game with the Suns last night in Delaware. He recorded one rebound and one assist off the bench in seven minutes.
