NAZ Suns Trade for Former Phoenix Suns Guard Archie Goodwin

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona Suns have traded for four-year NBA veteran and former Phoenix Suns guard Archie Goodwin, the team announced Sunday.

In a three-team trade involving Greensboro and Erie, the Suns acquired Goodwin from the Swarm.

Greensboro receives Northern Arizona’s first-round pick in the 2018 NBA G League Draft, originally owned by Delaware, Northern Arizona’s second-round pick in the same draft, a pick originally owned by Windy City, and forward Roscoe Smith from Erie.

Erie receives Greensboro’s first-round pick in the 2018 NBA G League Draft, originally owned by Wisconsin.

This trade is subject to a physical on Smith. Northern Arizona’s roster now stands at 11 players.

The Suns’ first-round pick used in the trade was acquired in the trade that sent guard Askia Booker to Delaware. The Suns’ second-round pick used in the trade was acquired in the trade that sent forward Anthony Bennett to Maine.

Goodwin (6-5, 205 pounds) makes his way back to Arizona where he played three seasons for the Phoenix Suns. He was drafted 29th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft out of the University of Kentucky by the Oklahoma City Thunder before he was traded to Phoenix the night of the draft.

The 23-year-old played his first three of four NBA years in the Valley of the Sun, improving his averages every season. His best statistical year came with Phoenix in 2015-16, where he averaged 8.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 57 games (13 starts).

Overall with the Phoenix Suns, Goodwin played in 150 career regular season games (15 starts). He averaged 6.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists, tallying 39 double-digit scoring games, nine games scoring 20+ points, and one double-double. The Suns waived him on Oct. 24, 2016.

Since his stint with Phoenix, Goodwin has been a part of three other NBA teams. He played three games with the New Orleans Pelicans and 12 games with the Brooklyn Nets last year. He also was a part of the Portland Trail Blazers training camp in 2017.

In 165 career NBA games, Goodwin holds averages of 6.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists.

Goodwin most recently played for the Greensboro Swarm, appearing in seven games this season. He played in 34 games for the Swarm last year, and on assignment from the Phoenix Suns, he played in 15 games with the Bakersfield Jam his first two professional years. He led the Jam to win the inaugural NBA D-League Showcase Cup in 2015, taking Most Valuable Player honors in the tournament.

With the Jam he averaged 23.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 15 games. In his NBA G League career, he has averaged 18.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals in 56 games (52 starts).

The Northern Arizona Suns next play in the NBA G League Showcase, where they’ll take on the Erie BayHawks on Wednesday at 10 a.m. MT in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
