PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona Suns announced today that head coach Ty Ellis will help lead the top prospects in basketball at the NBA Draft Combine, powered by Under Armour, this week.
The NBA Draft Combine, where players go through interviews, medical testing, scrimmaging and drills in front of NBA personnel in advance of the NBA Draft, kicked off today in Chicago.
Ellis is among four D-League coaches invited to participate in the Combine, where he will help lead the prospects, along with NBA coaches, during scrimmages and drills.
“Ty being asked to work the Chicago Combine reflects on his great reputation both as a coach and a person,” said NAZ Suns General Manager Bubba Burrage. “I’m sure he’ll do a great job for them just like he did for us last season.”
Under Ellis, two NAZ Suns players earned GATORADE Call-Ups from the D-League to the NBA last season, with both currently signed to multiyear deals with their respective teams. Johnny O’Bryant signed with the Denver Nuggets in the middle of the season and is now on the Charlotte Hornets, while Elijah Millsap is a member of the Phoenix Suns.
Ellis led the NAZ Suns to a 22-28 record in its inaugural season.
“We are so proud of Ty,” NAZ Suns President Chris Presson said. “It’s nice to see his hard work paying off. This is quite an honor for him personally and us as an organization, and I’m sure it’s just the start of what is to come for him.”
The NBA Draft Combine, powered by Under Armour, will last until Sunday, May 14, with 67 players expected to attend. The other three D-League coaches participating are Raptors’ Jerry Stackhouse, Rio Grande Valley’s Matt Brase and Delaware’s Eugene Burroughs.
Fans will get a chance to catch the action on ESPN2 on Thursday and Friday, from 12 to 4 p.m. PT each day.
Three other NAZ Suns players are also in Chicago this week, as Askia Booker, Derek Cooke Jr. and Josh Gray all earned invites to participate in the D-League Elite Mini Camp, held at the Quest Multisport gym.
