FRISCO, Tex. – Northern Arizona Suns guard Josh Gray achieved the first triple-double in team history on Nov. 27, but no teammate of his has achieved one since. Elijah Millsap came as close as one can come tonight in the Suns’ 127-118 loss at the Texas Legends.
Millsap tallied 23 points on 9-of-16 shooting, 12 rebounds and nine assists at the Dr. Pepper Arena Tuesday night. He entered the fourth quarter needing just one rebound and three assists, but as the game got away from Northern Arizona late, the Suns were forced to shoot deep shots, making it that much harder for Millsap to get that deciding dish on the night.
The Suns (19-21) extended their streak of hitting at least 11 three-pointers to six games with their 12-of-32 clip, but the Legends (20-19) made 10 more free throws, including 15 in the fourth quarter, to win the game.
Former NBA star Ben Gordon led all scorers tonight for Texas with 24 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-6 from deep, off the bench.
The Suns, meanwhile, got big games from numerous players besides just Millsap in the high-scoring affair.
Askia Booker recorded 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-6 from deep, five rebounds and three assists. Xavier Silas continued his great play with 17 points, while Josh Gray (14 points, seven rebounds, six assists) and Derek Cooke Jr. (10 points, 11 rebounds) powered the Suns’ bench.
Washington Wizards’ assignee Chris McCullough finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, with all of his points coming in the first half.
The D-League’s leading scorer Manny Harris (26.4 PPG) tallied 21 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the free throw line. Jameel Warney earned the Legends’ lone double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds, with C.J. Williams (16 points) and Stephane Lasme (15 points, nine rebounds, four blocks) also earning big games.
The Suns will get their chance at swift revenge, with both teams staying put to play again at the Dr. Pepper Arena on Thursday at 6 p.m. MT.
